Simon Gadbois integrates the neurosciences and the behavioural sciences in his research on applied olfaction in dogs. Since 2006, he has focussed on wildlife conservation canines and biomedical and detection dogs (his two main research programs) while being involved in other ventures (e.g., “archeology dogs”). Coming from neuroscience and ethology with wild canids (red foxes, coyotes, and wolves), he studied behavioural endocrinology in wolves (including the role of pheromones and scent marking in social behaviour), that led to his interest in olfaction. Learning theories were also central to his early university research in the 80’s working in neuropharmacology with rodent models. Being focussed on applications of canine olfaction, beyond basic training issues, the questions of motivation, motivation maintenance and motivational collapse are central to his interest in incentive theories of motivation and learning.
